FROM GHOULIES AND GHOSTIES:

With the annual unholy day tomorrow, I decided it was time for a Halloween posting. I of course had my own political slant to this. Go read "The Whistling In The Graveyard Vote".

THE REAL ME:

Found at World O'Crap, who unsurprisingly got the same result, even if she adheres to the Dark Side.

You Are a Snarky Blogger!

You've got a razor sharp wit that bloggers are secretly scared of.
And that's why they read your posts as often as they can!

What kind of blogger are you?

THE FALSE DEADLINE:

The mass media, whose minions seem mandated to flunk IQ tests before being hired, would lead you to believe that the "election" is only days away. Some of us know that the real fight will last for weeks yet to come, in the counting rooms, the courthouses, and even the legislatures.

Of course we can be spared all that if Our Noble Leader wins by a massive enough margin to utterly demoralize the Dems. To that end many of us are spending days campaigning door to door, evenings phoning voters, and nights stuffing last-minute personal reminders about the polls. As I predicted weeks ago, even blogging has to take a back seat to this.

On the other hand, liberals should all accept the inevitable, take a larger view, and just turn to contemplation of more lasting cultural landmarks. To help encourage them in such aesthetic pursuits, I have posted some excerpts from a classic Spanish novel at Don Arbusto.

THE NEWS IS VERY BAD....

I have emerged from my long nightmare of expletive-deleted computer problems enough to post this week's tweaking of clueless leftists at The American Street. It gives the very bare facts they would rather not face. Read it at "Waiting For The Electioneerer Or Someone Like Him". As the poet said, "In fact, you will not be saved."

DOUBLE STANDARDS:

This week liberals are in a tizzy over Sinclair's putting on a broadcast of an anti-Kerry film before the election, saying this violates campaign contribution limits. This is just one more instance of how the left believes in free speech for them, but not for corporations. If all people are entitled to exercise their first amendment rights, why doesn't that include "legal persons" as well?

No one at Sinclair forced anyone to help pay for their Republican propaganda. On the other hand, the cultural "elite" insists on their right to force taxpayers to help foot the bill for "art" for their own good, like silly museum exhibits, archaic operas, boring "public" television, and many irrelevant theatre groups.

I predict that none of them will complain about the "unfairness" or "violation of campaign contribution limits" as several such groups across the country this month open a new play that is nothing but a huge anti-Bush crusade. "Laura's Bush", by the mysterious Jane Martin, is a so-called "satire", in which the First Lady, held prisoner by a right-wing cabal, is "liberated" by a dominatrix and a Kansas librarian.
She further dilutes the tale with a simultaneous three-way lesbian seduction among Laura and her lingerie-clad liberators that gets progressively mock-hotter until it culminates in a strobe-lit orgy. ... A ravenously sex-starved Laura ... spills the beans on everything from the evil neo-cons to what it means when Condi Rice "debriefs" George.
When even the theatre critic in Bush-hating Sodom Francisco thinks the play is "a disappointment", then you know it must be tedious indeed. Yet it is also opening in "Atlanta; Los Angeles; Seattle; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Detroit; Houston; New York; Philadelphia and Chicago." Check it out if you are in one of those areas, and judge for yourself how "fair and balanced" it is. This is a much more organized campaign than the old anti-LBJ play "MacBird". Don't try to tell me that there is no vast left-wing conspiracy.

THIS POST HAS NO TITLE:

I certainly am not going to say anything good about the "thoughts" of any French philosopher just because he is now dead, like Jacques Derrida. The media is full of obits which utterly fail to understand what he was saying (luckily for him), applying to him blindly the principle set forth by Noah Cross in Chinatown:
'Course I'm respectable. I'm old. Politicians, ugly buildings and whores all get respectable if they last long enough.
The web varies between gushing praise and demulcent demi-demurrals. BertramOnline recalled the lyrics to a song about him. But the finder of shiny things, Magpie (who happily reports she will be back home and blogging again anon), pointed to the funniest post on his passing, Fafblog's "flowers for derrida", which begins:
We threw a Deathday Party to undermine the hegemonic life/death binary but for some reason everybody was still kinda sad....

WHO NEEDS AN AMENDMENT?:

The long-forgotten Prohibition Party took an idea from Sinclair Lewis, and split into two factions so that their huge vote totals won't scare the public. An interview with one of their two Veep candidates reveals what's really behind the spread of "similar pairs" from figure skating to wedding ceremonies:
Gay marriage "is a smoker's problem, too," he claimed. By his reasoning, smoking causes what he considers aberrant behavior, including homosexuality. Ban smoking, he said, and there would be no demand for gay marriage.
Read it at "Election is no party for Prohibition candidate" (spotted by John Venlet at Improved Clinch.)

HIERONYMUS BOSCH AT THE ALAMO:

I can only quote Dave Barry and promise "I am not making this up". I couldn't have, even if force fed with peyote. What makes me wonder if this is all a huge put-on by someone, is that it was pointed out by a site which delights in mocking religion, called "Gullibility isn't in the dictionary". Folks at WorldNetDaily are upset over an upcoming event:
All I can tell you is I wouldn't want to be within lightning strike distance of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio on Nov. 20-23.
What frightened that writer was their report about this:
An annual convention of American religion scholars from prominent institutions will feature sessions favorable toward sadomasochism, transvestism, transsexualism and polyamory.... The presentations offered at the American Academy of Religion's 2004 Annual Meeting in San Antonio next month ... [include] arguments for transvestism and transsexualism in Christian theology ... [and] "The Spiritual Dimensions of Leathersexuality"....

Ken Stone of Chicago Theological Seminary says a passage from the book of Jeremiah, chapter 20, verses 7-18, "can be construed more usefully as a kind of ritual S/M encounter between the male deity Yahweh and his male devotee." ...says the abstract to the paper, which is titled "'You Seduced Me, You Overpowered Me, and You Prevailed': Religious Experience and Homoerotic Sadomasochism in Jeremiah."

Timothy R. Koch of New Life Metropolitan Community Church offers a paper titled "Choice, Shame, and Power in the Construction of Sadomasochistic Theologies." ... [which] argues ... "One of the constitutive elements of sado-masochistic interactions is the removal of the masochist’s choices, making it possible for both masochist and sadist to proceed in a spiritually powerful state of relative shamelessness"....

Julianne Buenting of Chicago Theological Seminary offers a paper titled "Oh, Daddy! God, Dominance/Submission, and Christian Sacramentality and Spirituality" ... [which] "explores BDSM (bondage/dominance, sadomasochism) as potentially transformative encounter in relation to themes of trust and surrender, suffering and pleasure, self-shattering and self-donation found in Christian sacramentality and mystical spirituality ... ."
It would be easy to dissect this kind of nonsense. For instance, that passage from Jeremiah is really about the horrors God is going to inflict on a man who "smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks". He is told
thou, Pashur, and all that dwell in thine house shall go into captivity: and thou shalt come to Babylon, and there thou shalt die, and shalt be buried there, thou, and all thy friends....
The impending lament of the captives echoes chapter 3 of Job:
3 Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived
but adds a bloodier passage:
14 Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed.
15 Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee ...
17 Because he slew me not from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb to be always great with me.
It doesn't sound like "BDSM" to me, but it leaves me wondering which he was wishing had happened, infanticide or abortion. Either way, it seems entirely proper that this kind of radical "theology" is going to be propounded in the same state which gave us Lawrence v. Texas. Perhaps this will convince the world that Senator Santorum was truly a farsighted prophet, albeit one cruelly mocked in his own country.

THE HIDDEN AGENDA:

Considering the history of who has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, like a certain peanut farmer, we should have been suspicious when they gave the latest one to a leading tree-planter. Sure enough, it looks like a way for those Scandinavian socialists to give more publicity to the paranoid rantings of one more hater of America.
Kenyan ecologist Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, today reiterated her claim that the AIDS virus was a deliberately created biological agent. ...

"We invaded Iraq because we believed that Saddam Hussein had made, or was in the process of creating agents of biological warfare," said Ms Maathai.

"In fact it (the HIV virus) is created by a scientist for biological warfare," she added.

"Why has there been so much secrecy about AIDS? When you ask where did the virus come from, it raises a lot of flags. That makes me suspicious," Ms Maathai said.

MORE ON NUMBER TWO:

The Naderites are biting the hand which feeds their absent leader's vanity, by realeasing a report to imply that John Edwards and his ambulance-chasing ilk are really harmless. Hah!! I explain the truth at "Propping Up The Poster Boy".

KARMALIZING:

Sitting 'fore the TV screen
Watchin' the spin, oh so mean.
Seein' all the pundits lie,
Claimin' that our Prez did try
To say what just was not so
'Cause he did not even know
What the Supremes really meant
But they never made a dent
In his standing in the polls.
And on the Wurlitzer rolls!

DEBATABLE VICTORY:

Grabbing a moment from a week of computer changes, I had to post my illustrated take on the upcoming Presidential dog fights, in the form of an updated ancient poem.
Oh! young Dubya Bush is come out of the west....
Read it all at "Showdown At The Tempe Corral".

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED:
In last night's first Presidential "debate" Our Noble Leader was having the time of his life. He had so much fun that he gleefully gave the whole game away, knowing it would go over everyone's head, when he said "this is a great diversion." Nobody caught it.
Read the whole revealing thing at "Oh, Bob – you're such a tool!".
